Julia Holtmann is a German visual artist based in Ronda, Southern Spain.

After studying Visual Arts in Cape Town at the University of South Africa for a few years, she obtained a BA from the Design Department of the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg, Germany and an MFA from the University of Málaga, Spain. She has exhibited internationally in group and solo shows.

As a medium that can be at once utterly immediate and protracted, rudimentary and virtuosic, drawing allows me to explore the concepts and correlations of presence, time and being. Regular walks, keeping a drawing journal, collecting and examining found organic matter are the foundation of my process focussed art practice.

I find clues in nature, where I am particularly drawn to the discarded and overlooked. Weeds or withered residues as traces of transformation become access points to explore the intersection between the banal and the sublime.

While letting my fluctuating, abstract spaces emerge from automatic processes, observation and memory, I intend to investigate the power of the inbetween-spaces over meaning, legibility and perception. I understand my intricate but undefined imagery as an embrace of ambiguity and an encounter with isness.
